Are you tired of dealing with acid reflux every day? Are you wanting to stop being dependent on antacids or your medication and want to get to the root cause of why you are experiencing reflux?
Today we are going to talk about why you might have acid reflux and what to do about it.
I love this conversation because I work with so many people who struggle with this issue. My favorite stories are from my acid reflux patients because it is so rewarding to get to their root cause and see them feel better so quickly.
I have a lot of success stories: many people come to me with chronic sinusitis, asthma, and post nasal drip that is just not responding to inhalers, medications, or even natural support. Every time I get them to stop eating their trigger foods, (sorry, it’s the icecream at night), they can finally wake up the next morning without issues! Meaning, they wake up without coughing, they have their voice back, they can eat breakfast without getting sick, and actually sleep all night too.
Why are you taking the antacids?
Take your prescriptions, I can’t tell you to stop so it is important that you work with your prescribing physician.
Know the side effects of proton pump inhibitors:
Decreased vitamin and mineral absorption
Increased fatigue and mitochondrial issues
Increased risk of heart disease and kidney disease
Increased risk of dementia
Increased risk of SIBO, C. Diff, H. pylori
Food will be the main factor in support:
Will still have main triggers, the meds are not a cure
Caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, spicy foods – will always have to avoid
No eating after 6pm, raise your bed up, smaller meals, chew your food
My patients who continue to eat their trigger foods do not get better (story in podcast)
Silent acid reflux is a sign you still need support and should not ignore this
Erosion of esophagus – scary b/c cancer
Teeth issues – see a dentist
Postnasal drip is connected as well as chronic sinusitis
Chronic asthma/sinus issues that don’t resolve with meds or natural support
ACV – check for ulcers, If positive then you need no HCL
Enzymes – take with every meal 2+. Many times acid reflux is linked to low stomach acid.
Repairvite: marshmallow, enzymes, gentle
Aloe vera –
Watch probiotics because of SIBO and histamine
- Vit B6
- Folic Acid
Essential oils like ginger, copaiba, DigestZen can help both topically and internally. I love the DigestTabs as a quick support for upset stomach, and the soft gels for daily long term support.
Infections can cause acid reflux:
H. Pylori and protozoa: GI Map Test
Pyloric stenosis, hiatal hernia, diaphragm dysfunction
PT, Craniosacral support
Endoscopy and colonoscopy
This is a little known but potentially major cause of many people’s unexplained GERD symptoms. Eosinophilic esophagitis is an allergic response to an antigen (invading immune stimulator). Some of the most common triggers to EE include: mold spores, dander, certain foods, toxic metals. EE may cause acid reflux symptoms, but often also include other symptoms: tightness in throat and a difficulty swallowing.
Stress and vagus nerve
Adaptocrines and rhodiola
Vagus nerve exercises like gargling, gagging and enemas
